Projection: need to automatically qualify
UMBC’s body of work combines a couple of gritty wins, like the road victory at Morgan State and narrow home decisions over Wagner and Delaware State, with several damaging road defeats at Dayton, Georgetown and a lopsided loss at George Washington. The nonconference slate has offered little in the way of a signature neutral-site victory and the remaining chances against Bucknell, Buffalo and a trip to South Florida are the clearest opportunities to change that perception. In America East play most of the opportunities come against familiar opponents and while wins at Vermont, Bryant or on the road at MA Lowell and NJIT can build a record, they do not substitute for the kind of true road or neutral success committees prize. Given the quality of the losses and the thinness of the best wins, UMBC’s resume needs a convincing upset away from home or a strong run through the league to alter how it looks on Selection Sunday.
