VMI’s season profile makes the practical path to the NCAA tournament a conference title, because the roster has produced a handful of encouraging moments but not the kind of signature wins that sway a selection body. The Highlanders showed they can grind out results with a gritty road victory at Southern Indiana and home wins over Loyola Maryland and Chattanooga, yet those highlights are countered by brutal losses at Missouri, Richmond and UCF and neutral-site setbacks to Buffalo and Bowling Green that hollow the nonconference résumé. Conference play has been uneven, with damaging road defeats at Radford, ETSU, Furman and Western Carolina undercutting any claim to a strong road resume, so the remaining stretch matters: home dates against Wofford, ETSU and Furman and a home meeting with Western Carolina are the clearest opportunities to repair the profile while trips to Citadel, Mercer and UNC Greensboro are must-not-lose moments that will be hard to navigate.
