Projection: need to automatically qualify

New Mexico State’s résumé has clear highs and damaging lows: a signature win over New Mexico plus solid neutral-site victories at UC Irvine and Georgia State and a convincing road win at Delaware show they can beat quality opponents, but those moments are offset by harmful losses away and on neutral courts such as defeats at Abilene Christian, at Florida International, at Liberty and a neutral loss to Tulsa that expose inconsistency away from home. The committee will weigh the scarcity of quality road and neutral wins against the number of damaging defeats and conclude the cleanest path to the NCAA field is securing the automatic spot from the Conference USA tournament. The current slate still provides chances to erase those blemishes with road tests at Kennesaw and Louisiana Tech and home opportunities against Liberty and UTEP, but New Mexico State must cash those in to avoid relying on a conference title.
